A mother of a Form One student wept bitterly after finding out that her daughter who was set to join Mugoiri Girls High School in Murang’a had been denied admission on the reporting day. Rachel Amogola arrived at Mugoiri Girls on Monday, August 1, excited to see her daughter Hilda join the national school in which she was placed by the government after scoring 381 marks in the 2020 Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE).

However, on arrival, the mother found out that Hilda’s name had been removed from the admission list and had been transferred to little-known Wambasa Secondary in Siaya.

“The changes were done without our knowledge as we do not know how it happened since we had not requested for a transfer as we had researched and found that Mugoiri is a very good school,” she said. Despite having the student’s admission letter, Amogola and her daughter were turned away after queuing for hours making the heartbroken mother break down in pain of seeing her daughter’s well-deserved chance of joining a national school being taken away from her.

A video of her wailing while praying over the injustice irked many Kenyans who called on the Ministry of Education to speedily investigate the alleged swapping of Hilda’s position in Mugoiri Girls. Ann Kiilu, the county director of education assured the matter will be sorted adding she had already contacted the education ministry over the issue.

The 2020 KCPE candidates reported to their respective high schools on Monday, August 2, after completing their national exams in March 2021. The students reported in school for the first term in the 2021/2022 school calendar which kicked off on July 26, 2021.

The term will run up to October 1, 2021, while the second term will commence 10 days later and will end on December 23, 2021. Students will take a Christmas break and resume learning on January 3, 2022, for their third term. The term will end on March 4, 2022.

KCPE and KCSE will take place in March 2022 and end by April 2022.
