Story by Ann Wambui
Today is a special day and one of my favourite of the year. As I am writing this, my heart is full of joy knowing that one of the most amazing human beings in my world is sleeping soundly and snoring the night away. Mother’s Day is celebrated every second Sunday of May and 2020 is no exception with this year being marked on May 10. This day is purposed to appreciate all mothers and mother figures worldwide who took a full time job of raising children. It is certainly not an easy task but the reward cannot be quantified.
Mothers are special and God saw it fit for them to be the channels for life on earth. Strengthened their bodies with the ability to carry a child for nine months, deliver a baby amid the painful of contractions and deliver pain, breastfeeding and all that comes with nurturing a child. You and I would not be here today were it not for our mothers.
I would like to specially recognize a mother who has raised a child/children who are not biological, the one who transitioned, the one who did and still has to do what needs to be done to protect and provide for her children and family. Mothers are the strongest people to have ever been created and exist.
Last but not least. To the father who is raising or has raised children on his own in the absence of a mother figure, we salute you. For not giving up and pushing hard and strong for your loved ones. For all the countless nights that we cried sometimes because of illness or attention or hunger. For helping us dress up and eventually teaching us to do things by ourselves. For taking us to nursery on the first day even as hard as it was seeing and hearing the wailing but you had to leave. For every single time we were causing trouble but you loved us the same and finally for every moment and sacrifice you made for us. A big THANK YOU.
To the grandmothers, mothers, aunts, cousins, sisters, friends, fathers and any other person I may have forgotten to mention, Happy Mother’s Day to you. We see all you do and we appreciate your care and love. Thank you. Even though one day is not enough to show our love, we want you to know that we have not forgotten your significance in our lives and together with billions of others worldwide we want to specially recognize you.
