To improve learning opportunities for learners with hearing and visual impairment, Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) has launched an online digital learning platform for Grade Four learners.
This according to KICD is aimed at improving learning opportunities for all, especially those who have difficulty in reading and gaining information from print materials.
Learning areas developed for learners with Visual Impairment are Mathematics, Social Studies, Science and Technology, English Language Activities, Kiswahili Language Activities, Arts and Craft, Christian Religious Education (CRE), Home Science, Agriculture, and Music.
The learning areas for Hearing Impaired learners are; Mathematics, Social Studies, Science and Technology, English Language Activities, Arts and Craft, Christian Religious Education (CRE), Home Science, Agriculture, and Music.
The total estimated population of children with disabilities in Kenya is 13.5 percent or 2,489,252 of which 1,261,877 are males and 1,227,375 are females.
Due to lack of proper infrastructure to cater for their needs in learning institutions, only six percent are enrolled in school.
About 3.1 percent of this population aged 3 to 21 years have visual impairment and hearing, speech and language difficulties record a prevalence of 1.2 percent and 0.9 percent respectively while 0.2 percent is deafblind.
