About

Kenya has made progress in leveraging educational technology however the country still faces challenges in terms of device access, connectivity, teacher training, and addressing concerns around data privacy and security. Continued efforts are needed to ensure equitable access and effective integration of edtech in Kenyan classrooms.

Efforts that have been made to transform educational technology systems in East Africa and truly empower learners and prepare them for the future are;

  • Ensuring that Edtech initiatives reach and benefit all students, regardless of their socioeconomic background, location, or abilities.
  •  Addressing the digital divide and providing equitable access to devices, connectivity, and digital learning resources.
  • Designing edtech solutions that are culturally relevant and cater to the diverse needs of the region’s learners.

Edtech Pre-Summit 2024 OUTCOME STATEMENT

EDTech Kenya

The Kenya EdTech Summit is an annual conference that focuses on the latest trends, innovations and best practices in educational technology (EdTech) in Kenya and the broader East African region.

The summit brings together a wide range of stakeholders, including educators, school administrators, EdTech entrepreneurs, policymakers, and technology companies. Sessions and discussions cover a variety of EdTech topics such as online/distance learning, educational software and apps, emerging technologies in education, teacher professional development, and educational policies. The main goals of the summit are to showcase innovative EdTech solutions, facilitate knowledge sharing, network education stakeholders, and promote the adoption of technology in the Kenyan education sector. The Kenya EdTech Summit is an important event that highlights the growing role of technology in transforming education in the country and the East African region. It provides a valuable platform for collaboration and learning in the field of educational technology.

Children pre-Summit

 The growing presence of digital technology in children’s lives reqA 2024 report by UNICEF Innocenti shows that children are spending more time in digital spaces than ever before, using a range of mobile apps, social media platforms, connected devices and online games from ever earlier ages. This was intensified by the COVID-19 pandemic that restricted physical engagements among individuals the world over, rapidly moving additional aspects of children’s daily lives online. in discussions about educational technology. The space they occupy for majority of their time should be shaped by their views and opinions.https://www.unicef.org/innocenti/reports/responsible-innovation-technology-children experience the impact of EdTech in their daily lives.

Execution

Child Participation is an essential part of making systems, and institutions work for the Best Interest of the Child, as per Article 12 of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC). The pre-summit will take consultation-collaboration approach, with reference to the Hart-Ladder model of child participation: Rung 5, where children are consulted on matters that affect them, they share feedback and are informed of the decisions adults make in relation to the feedback they give on the matter. This approach is justified as the objectives of the pre-summit are clearly laid out prior to the child engagement, hence the role the children will be taking is more consultative.

Execution

The Pre-Summit will be executed in two phases: A Pre-Activity in the form of a virtual Hackathon and The actual Pre-Summit. This is to ensure holistic and wholesome engagement with children and the conceptualization of their ideas. The proposed number of child participants is 200 children comprising 70 attending the actual pre-summit physically in Nairobi. The children will be drawn from 8 regions: Central Region, Eastern Region, Rift Valley Region, Western Region, Nyanza Region, North Eastern Region, and Coastal Region, while Nairobi Region will get the rest of the slots. The pre-summit will be hybrid, while we will have 5 child representatives from each region, it is important to note that we would still like to have the other children participate in the pre-summit event, virtually on Zoom hosted by Mtoto News.
