Children constitute over 40% of Africa’s population and UNICEF estimates that Africa’s child population will reach 1 billion by 2055, making it the largest child population among all continents. Today, over half a billion children live in extremely high flood occurrence zones: nearly 160 million live in high or extremely high drought severity zones. While climate change will ultimately impact every child, these children are already in harm’s way and face some of the most immediate risks. Children, especially young children, live their lives at a faster pace than adults. Consequently, anything harmful in the environment is bound to have a relatively greater impact on them.

To develop child friendly materials that will simplify complex climate jargon for children for them to understand climate change concepts.

Child friendly material

Climate change concepts and terms are hard for children to understand and comprehend. That is why we need to simplify them. We’ll achieve this through engaging animations, informative booklets, and interactive games tailored for children.

Climate Dictionary

In Phase 1, we will create a climate dictionary for children, using animations and booklets to simplify complex topics and make them engaging. This will help children understand climate concepts and empower them to hold policymakers accountable.

Climate dictionary game.

In Phase 2, we’ll develop a game. In this game, the layout displays pairs of cards on the screen. One set of cards contains word definitions related to climate change, while the other set contains potential word answers. Users would click on a word from the answer set to match it with the correct definition. When a correct match is made, the card pair would flip to reveal either “true” or “false” as an educational element. This engaging format helps users learn and retain information about climate change terminology.

Support child led initiatives in climate change mitigation

Children have proven that they are able to solve the climate change challenges that the world is facing. For example, after the African Children Summit and Africa Climate Summit, several children came up with projects on the mitigation of climate change. To ensure that children continue to innovate on climate change mitigation.

Climate Game

To enable children to understand Climate change and know how they can act, Mtoto News will support children to develop Climate Change in digital and board formats. Mtoto Gone Green presents the “Online Tree Planting Game,” an innovative project aimed at raising climate change awareness among Gen-Z. Players engage in a virtual world affected by climate change and can plant real trees, bridging the gap between digital and real-life impact. This game aligns with climate action and sustainability SDGs. It offers a unique experience by combining real-world tree planting with virtual engagement, gamification, and collaborative partnerships. Expected outcomes include increased climate change awareness, interest in tree planting, and reforestation funding through the game.
