One thing for sure we are not going back to normal, one thing has been disrupted and will continue to be disrupted is education. Here is what I see change. Parents have been spending more time with their children and now may have understood their learning ability and this will start to determine the decision parents start taking on the kind of education they want for their children.
Technology has played a huge role in enabling our children to learn over the last few months, and it will continue determining how they will continue to learn.
The two factors will disrupt schooling and education as we know it. We will start seeing a more curated, personalised, experiential and flexible education.
Parents have become experts in looking for content for their children and this will not stop and hence curated education, where parents will look content that is palatable to their children or helps their children learn better. Hence, youtube has become the number one classroom as many parents get content that children can use to learn.
For a long time, parents have known all children have to do Math, Science and Social studies. But now, parents are realising that not all their children love math, hence they start looking for materials that their children are good at, for example, if a child is good at cooking, parents will compile content on cookery and less on math. This will continue as more parents enable their children to thrive in what they are good at.
Staying at home has made children become freer and watching videos, but also doing a lot of DIY. the DIY will continue and become complex and more parents are realising that DIY can be used as a platform for learning and thus they will start exposing them to more content that engages them and allows them to experiment. Children are learning some concepts without a teacher but through experimenting and this will continue as the window in the brains can not be closed.
Everyone has a time in the day that they have the most energy and can be most productive, but over the years we have forced our children to wake up to go school, only to realise in the last week it was better to let them wake at 12noon and let them work in the afternoon. Hence, we are experiencing the end of 9 to 4 classes, as parents understand what is the optimal time for their children to learn, they will start scheduling classes during those times.
This new realization will determine the type of education parents will lean towards, we will see an increase in parents opting for homeschooling, but also an increase in demand on personal tutors.
Hence here comes the start of uber type of school, teachers will be booked and paid per hour/minute the way we order rides. The better the teacher, the more on-demand he/she will be and probably more expensive.
what does this mean to learning institutions? They have to start reinventing themselves as content creators or centers of learning that requires corporate learning…..
