A standard two pupil was on Saturday rescued by police from a forced marriage in Kajiado West sub-county.
The 9 year-old girl from Esonorua Primary School was rescued before being married off to a 58 year-old man as his fifth wife.
According to Kajiado county commissioner David Kipkemei, the officers arrived at the scene just before the ceremony officially began with families from both sides present.
Mr Kipkemei said that am assistant chief from the village was arrested during the rescue operation as he tried to flee together with others present, leaving the child crying. The assistant chief was later charged in a Kajiado court and penalized for attending an illegal marriage.
Speaking to the press, commissioner Kipkemei said that it was also reported that the accused had facilitated the pupil’s circumcision.
Female Genital Mutilation and early child marriages have been for long been a major challenge in the county as most of the residents do not value education for the girl.
The fight against child marriage and female circumcision has been on-going in the country focusing on the major areas these rituals are practiced and educating parents and children as well.
