A lot of girls in Kenya are being recruited into Diva Clubs especially around the time they’re in high school. Diva Clubs are known to expose these girls to sexual exploitation online. The girl is exposed step by step in what is known as grooming. Grooming is the practice of ‘solicitation of children for sexual purposes.’ It is the process in which an offender prepares a child for sexual abuse, where the offender aims at gaining the trust of the child and eventually the child is used for sexual purposes.
The truth is, girls join Diva Clubs to have room to be accepted. Martha Sunda, executive director of Childline Kenya, puts it this way, “at high school children are adolescents and they have this need for belonging so Diva Clubs give them a place they can belong and can identify with.”
To some extent, it’s okay for girls to belong, but they can do better than pursue such abusive opportunities like joining Diva Clubs. Parents or guardians should make no mistake of neglecting their children. Some girls are tired of feeling a sense of negligence? Then I guess we should go ahead and realize that these girls will do anything to rise to be heard, and it certainly wouldn’t be fair to them if they end up being sexually exploited due to our silence.
