Diana Nyokabi was called to Moi Girls High School in Eldoret after performing exemplary in her KCPE exams in 2020 by scoring 401 out of the possible 500. Nyokabi’s parents were unable to raise the KSh 53,554 required to enroll her in Moi Girls.
They hoped the county scholarship programme would ease their burden but were shocked to learn that her name had been struck from the list. The move has forced Nyokabi to return to her previous primary school to repeat Class Eight, she expressed concern that her desire to attend her ideal secondary school may be dashed forever following this development.
Citizen TV reported Nyokabi’s parents were unable to raise the KSh 53,554 required to enroll her in the school, forcing her to return to her previous primary school to repeat Class Eight. “I have been selling groceries for a very long time and educating my daughter hoping that in the future she will be able to assist me,” Nyokabi’s mother, Priscilla Nyanchera, said.
Nyokabi who stated she was overjoyed when she was chosen for the Governor Wycliffe Wangamati-led scholarship, only to discover later that her name had been removed. Nyokabi, who aspires to be a lawyer in the future, appealed to anyone who can assist her with enrolling in Form One so she can continue with her studies.
Tobias Khisa, the head teacher of D.E.B Primary School, said he had received the child back with great surprise. He further observed that her position may demoralize many students at the school but that he would still admit her.
